This is a part-time position (15 hours/week minimum) for undergraduate students based in ELPC’s downtown Madison, Wisconsin office. RESPONSIBILITIES: The intern will assist ELPC’s Senior Policy Advocates, Policy Associates, and others with a variety of tasks, including work on clean energy and farm bill related projects across the Midwest and Great Plains. Other potential projects include global warming solutions, stopping mercury and other pollutants from coal plants, and preserving wild places. Tasks may include: Research energy and environmental topics, preparing memos, summaries and annotated bibliographies. Research federal and state legislation. Find organizations, people and contact information in key states and districts. Research and track events. Review reports and prepare summary memos. Update and manage MS Access databases. Write menu screens and queries to simplify data access. If skills are available, add GIS mapping to databases. Perform analysis of grant data. Provide web site assistance and convert documents to web content. Update and enter data. QUALIFICATIONS: Strong academic record and excellent writing, speaking and analytical skills. Posted: April 22, 2008 Fall InternshipThe Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC), the Midwest’s leading environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization, seeks to hire an intern from September, 2008 to December, 2008. The intern can be a student or recent graduate who will assist ELPC staff in promoting a statewide student environmental advocacy network and other key environmental policy issues in Illinois. This is a full-time position. RESPONSIBILITIES: The intern will meet with student environmental groups at colleges and universities in Illinois to encourage the building of a statewide environmental organization. In addition, interns work with ELPC policy advocates on current statewide, regional and national campaigns as needed. The intern will also play an important role in assisting the organizations transfer to its own independent organization. Responsibilities will include public education and outreach, policy research and development, policy advocacy and grassroots organizing. This position requires occasional travel throughout the Illinois. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have strong academic records, excellent oral communication and writing skills, strong analytic abilities and a demonstrated interest in public interest and environmental advocacy. Legal interns support ELPC's state and federal litigation and policy work throughout the Midwest. ELPC plans to hire 2 to 3 first or second year law students and 1 to 2 third year law students for Summer 2008. RESPONSIBILITIES: Our summer law student interns work with ELPC attorneys and other professional staff on ELPC policy, legislative and general advocacy issues, and on federal and state court litigation. Job activities may include legal and legislative research, litigation and pre-litigation support, developing case strategies, legislative drafting, clean energy business development, grass roots advocacy work, and special projects. Interns also may attend meetings with state and federal agencies, legislators, concerned citizens, and participate in depositions and other litigation activities.
