Making A Difference
Iowa Governor Signs Energy Efficiency BillMay 7, 2008 - Governor Chet Culver signed a bill designed to boost the state's energy efficiency in a number of ways. Highlights of the bill include a new energy efficiency commission that will develop stricter standards for building construction, and a requirement that the state's electric utilities develop efficiency goals and formally report on progress toward achieving them. ELPC and our partners are leading the Iowa Global Warming Solutions Campaign, which will be working to implement renewable energy, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas pollution reduction policies in Iowa.
Arizona Adopts Clean Cars StandardMay 6, 2008 - Arizona has become the fourteenth state in the country to adopt "Clean Car" standards. Arizona joined four western/southwestern states and nine states on the East Coast to adopt California's stricter vehicle emissions standards, including the regulation that limits carbon dioxide pollution. ELPC is a lead supporter of Illinois' proposed clean cars bill that is currently pending in the state legislature. Minnesota is also considering the standards.
Chicago to Adopt Blue Cart Recycling ProgramMay 2, 2008 -- Mayor Richard Daley announced today that the City of Chicago will be adopting a blue cart recycling program citywide to replace its blue bag program. Recycling carts have proven very effective in other cities and in neighorhood tests in Chicago. By the end of 2011, all 600,000 Chicago families with residential garbage pick up will recieve blue carts for their recycling. ELPC applauds the Mayor and the City of Chicago for adopting this proven model for successful residential recycling.
US EPA Administrator Mary Gade Forced to ResignMay 1, 2008 - US EPA Region V Administrator Mary Gade announced that she was forced to resign after attempting to make Dow Chemical clean up dioxin contamination stemming from its operations in Midland, Michigan. According to the Chicago Tribune story, "Gade, a former corporate attorney appointed by Bush in September 2006, invoked emergency powers last year to force Dow to clean up four hot spots of dioxin, including the largest amount of the cancer-causing chemical ever recorded in the United States."
"We respect Mary's tenure and leadership at the US EPA," said ELPC Executive Director Howard Learner. "This is unfortunate." |
