ENVIRONMENTALISTS COMMEND MIDWEST GOVERNORS' BOLD ACTIONS
Accord Advances Global Warming Solutions and Spurs New Green Economy

Milwaukee, WI - Governors of 12 Midwestern states met today at the Midwest Governors Association's Energy Summit in Milwaukee to take action on key clean energy development and global warming solution policies. The summit resulted in six Midwest Governors and the Premier of Manitoba signing a regional cap-and-trade policy to reduce global warming pollution over the coming decades.

Howard Learner, Executive Director of the Environmental Law & Policy Center, the Midwest's leading environmental progress and economic development advocacy organization, commended the Governors' actions.

"The Governors' bold path to reduce global warming pollution will grow more green jobs for the Midwest economy. There will be a big regional clean energy economic boost from the combined impacts of the Midwest states acting together."

Under the agreement, the states would set up a regional cap-and-trade system to reduce global warming pollution by 60% to 80% by 2050.

"The regional cap-and-trade system with strong percentage pollution reduction standards can make the Midwest states into a clean energy powerhouse. It's time to invest in more Midwest clean energy and less in Mideast oil," said Learner.

The six Midwestern states include Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
