Summer Internship - Madison, Wisconsin

The Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC), the Midwest’s leading environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization, seeks to hire an intern from June 2008 through August 2008. This is a part-time position (15 hours/week minimum) for undergraduate students based in ELPC’s downtown Madison, Wisconsin office.  

RESPONSIBILITIES: The intern will assist ELPC’s Senior Policy Advocates, Policy Associates, and others with a variety of tasks, including work on clean energy and farm bill related projects across the Midwest and Great Plains.  Other potential projects include global warming solutions, stopping mercury and other pollutants from coal plants, and preserving wild places.  Tasks may include: Research energy and environmental topics, preparing memos, summaries and annotated bibliographies.  Research federal and state legislation. Find organizations, people and contact information in key states and districts.  Research and track events. Review reports and prepare summary memos. Update and manage MS Access databases. Write menu screens and queries to simplify data access. If skills are available, add GIS mapping to databases. Perform analysis of grant data. Provide web site assistance and convert documents to web content. Update and enter data. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Strong academic record and excellent writing, speaking and analytical skills. Smart self-starter with track record of initiative and success.Interest in at least one of the following fields: energy, environment, air quality, land use and/or natural resources protection. An inspired and demonstrated commitment to public interest advocacy and an ability to work productively as a member of a team of skilled professionals is required.

Fall Internship

The Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC), the Midwest’s leading environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization, seeks to hire an intern from September, 2008 to December, 2008.   The intern can be a student or recent graduate who will assist ELPC staff in promoting a statewide student environmental advocacy network and other key environmental policy issues in Illinois.  This is a full-time position.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The intern will meet with student environmental groups at colleges and universities in Illinois to encourage the building of a statewide environmental organization. In addition, interns work with ELPC policy advocates on current statewide, regional and national campaigns as needed. The intern will also play an important role in assisting the organizations transfer to its own independent organization. Responsibilities will include public education and outreach, policy research and development, policy advocacy and grassroots organizing. This position requires occasional travel throughout the Illinois.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates should have strong academic records, excellent oral communication and writing skills, strong analytic abilities and a demonstrated interest in public interest and environmental advocacy.

SALARYThe salary is $3,000 per semester.

Executive Director - Iowa Interfaith Power and Light

Iowa Interfaith Power and Light (IIPL) is a statewide organization
mobilizing the religious community to become leaders in the fight against
global warming.  Launched two years ago, IIPL gave birth to the "Cool
Congregations" stewardship program, having already trained 150 congregations
to take pro-active steps to curb global warming in their houses of worship
and homes.

Based in Des Moines, IIPL is now seeking its first full-time Executive

Energy Modeler, Clean Energy Program - The Union of Concerned Scientists

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is seeking an Energy Modeler to conduct analysis and modeling of clean energy and global warming policies at the state, regional and national level. The candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team in our Clean Energy Program to advance strong clean energy policies. Candidates must have a solid background in energy modeling and the energy field in general.

UCS is a leading science-based nonprofit organization working for a healthy planet and a safer world. UCS was founded in 1969 and currently has a membership and activist base of more than 100,000, a staff of over 100, and offices in Cambridge (MA), Washington (DC), and Berkeley (CA).

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Clean Energy Program Research Director, the Modeler will:

Conduct modeling and spreadsheet analyses of proposed renewable energy, energy efficiency, and global warming policies at the state, regional, and national level; Quantify energy, economic, environmental, and public health impacts of proposed policies; Assist UCS staff in reviewing and developing model assumptions; Identify and make model modifications, where appropriate; Acquire and maintain energy and electricity sector models; Maintain regular contact with modelers and energy analysts from other organizations and government agencies to keep up to date on the latest analyses and model developments; Review analyses from other organizations and government agencies; Assist UCS staff in writing reports, papers, and fact sheets highlighting the results of various analyses; and Prepare and give presentations on modeling results and reports at conferences and meetings.

Qualifications: Knowledge of energy and electricity sector models, and their application for analyzing renewable energy, efficiency, and electricity technologies, markets, and policies. Applicants should possess an advanced degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, economics, or related field, or equivalent experience. Strong quantitative, analytical, and research skills are required. Proficiency with computer models, spreadsheets, word processing, and presentation software is necessary. Familiarity with energy efficiency technologies, policies, costs, and benefits is helpful.

Experience: Position requires at least 2-3 years of experience using energy and electricity sector models, with more experience preferred.
Familiarity with and experience using the Energy Information Administration*s National Energy Modeling System and electricity capacity expansion models is highly desirable. Computer programming experience and skills are also strongly preferred.

Risk Analyst, Clean Energy Program - The Union of Concerned Scientists

We seek to better evaluate, document and communicate the benefits of efficiency and renewable energy strategies to hedge against future risks associated with emissions, fuel prices, and other factors. Evaluate costs, benefits and risks of decisions to invest in or delay decisions on new power plants, from perspective of utilities, regulators, investors, and large corporate energy consumers. The candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team in our Clean Energy and Climate Change Programs to advance strong clean energy and climate policies and regulations. Candidates must have a solid background in risk-analysis and valuation methodologies, with knowledge of energy technologies and decision-making preferred.

Qualifications: Knowledge of options and decision analysis and other risk analysis methods, and ability to apply to analyzing the risks of energy alternatives. Applicants should possess an advanced degree in business, finance, economics, mathematics, engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience. Strong quantitative, research, and communication skills are required. Proficiency with computer models, spreadsheets, word processing, and powerpoint is necessary. Knowledge of energy technologies and economics is a major plus.

Experience: Position requires at least 1-3 years of experience conducting and understanding risk analysis. Experience working with the financial community is highly desirable.

Legal Director - The Center for Earth Jurisprudence

The Center for Earth Jurisprudence (www.earthjuris.org) is seeking a legal director with environmental law experience and grounding in the social and natural sciences, to develop new approaches to law that address environmental devastation, eco-justice, biodiversity, and human-Earth relations. The mission of the Center, co-sponsored by both Barry and St. Thomas Universities, is to re-envision law and governance from an Earth-centered perspective. The Center takes an interdisciplinary approach to designing legal responses that further the viability of the Earth community.    The ideal candidate will have considerable environmental law and related business or public policy experience to address issues of law and governance from an interdisciplinary approach and within the context of global dynamics affecting the eco-systems in various bio-regions.   

Responsibilities
:

  • research and develop new applications of law and public policy for an ecological age;
  • develop programming for the larger legal communities and encourage others to participate in re-thinking law and governance;
  • prepare legal and informational articles for the legal and public policy communities to bring about appropriate legal changes while furthering the transformation in consciousness that leads to action; and
  • help develop law school course curriculum that includes basic principles and applications of Earth Jurisprudence in various core and elective courses, such as business organizations, property, torts, remedies, land use, jurisprudence, constitutional law, international law, natural resources, health, criminal law, estates and trusts, and guardianship law.

The candidate should have an interest in teaching Earth Jurisprudence-oriented courses and assisting professors in developing Earth Jurisprudence modules for existing courses as well as collaborating with a future legal clinic whereby students could apply or test developing Earth Jurisprudence principles.   In addition, the Center is interested in exploring the feasibility of creating a certificate or LL.M. program with an Earth Jurisprudence approach to the ecological health and viability of the Earth community, so conceptual integration of Earth Jurisprudence principles within interdisciplinary courses, such as economics, business, public policy, engineering, ecology and other Earth sciences is a priority.   The legal director will work closely with the Executive Director in designing future programming components of the Center consistent with Earth Jurisprudence approaches, which recognize the inherent right of all inhabitants of the natural world to exist and the obligation of humans to care for and protect the eco-systems and viability of the planet for future generations of all species.        

Qualifications:  

  • A law degree with at least 5 years experience in environmental law or a related field, such as indigenous or international law, environmental economics, or jurisprudence;
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills; ability to articulate the Center’s priorities,  objectives and mission within the academic community, among legal practitioners nationally, and to the legal academy in national and international settings;
  • Publication of research;
  • Evidence of teaching competency and experience that demonstrates a potential in curricular design;
  • Familiarity and/or experience with raising funds from individuals, foundations, and other organizations; and
  • Collaborative style of work ethic.

Sustainability Consultant - Madison Environmental Group

Madison Environmental Group, Inc. is seeking an ambitious, creative, passionate sustainability consultant to add value to our growing mission-driven team.

Sustainability consultant responsibilities:
• Develop and deploy strategic sustainability plans for organizational clients (e.g. businesses, institutions, municipalities, etc.). Plan and facilitate visioning sessions, eco-charrettes and workshops. Research and develop attractive alternatives and creative solutions to address the triple bottom line aspects of ecological, social and economic sustainability. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the primary representative of the program, fostering the collaborative spirit among the full spectrum of partner organizations. 
  • Develop strong subject matter expertise on key issues at the center of policy and commercial developments affecting rural clean energy in the Northwest.  Inform internal strategy discussions, make public presentations and speak with reporters.
  • Provide substantial operational support to our signature annual event -- the HCE Conference.
  • Operate as primary liaison to the agriculture and rural communities for CS policy campaigns, helping ensure policy proposals will benefit rural communities and coordinating policy engagement of rural and agriculture leaders for CS campaigns. Part of this function is to ensure up-to-date relationship tracking and data base management.
  • Contribute increasingly to program communications, ranging from our weekly "HCE Report" on NW Ag Information Radio Network, to success story profiles for the HCE website, to media outreach.

Energy Policy Outreach Specialist - Center on Wisconsin Strategy

The Center on Wisconsin Strategy (COWS) is a national research policy center and field laboratory for high-road economic development. COWS' work is collaborative, experimental, and evidence-driven. COWS believes that the best way to predict the future is to start making it, particularly in our states and metro regions.

1) Serving as staff on "manufacturing conversion" project including research, writing and dissemination of reports on how to promote the conversion of existing manufacturing to renewable/efficient products and components; and outreach to business, labor and the environmental community to promote such conversion.
2) Serving as staff on "labor in the new energy economy" project --including reaching out to labor unions throughout the Great Lakes region to educate them on new energy options and opportunities, and to bring labor concerns and priorities to the table at broader energy and environmental forums.

We're looking for someone with experience communicating and writing to diverse audiences, e.g. organized labor, community and environmental groups, public and private sectors (at least 3 years of professional experience working with the public required, at least 7 years of experience to be considered at the Sr. level). The Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking a Legislative Associate for its recently established Washington, DC office.  SELC has been defending the health and environment of the Southeast for more than 20 years, and this is a rare opportunity to help bring our expertise and the environmental issues of the southeastern United States to Capitol Hill.

About the position:  The Legislative Associate will work in close partnership with the DC Legislative Director to advance SELC’s policy objectives in Congress. This position is an opportunity to work on legislative issues critical to the Southeast and actively participate in advocacy on the Hill.  It also involves administrative responsibilities to ensure the smooth operation of SELC’s DC office.

Qualifications and Salary: The ideal candidate will be highly organized with a strong academic background, have at least 1-2 years in environmental advocacy and legislative affairs, and bring a strong personal commitment to SELC’s mission and an understanding of the environmental issues and challenges facing the Southeast.  Advanced degree (MPP, JD) a plus but not required.  Salary is $30-40,000 commensurate with experience, plus an excellent benefits package.

Chicago Zoological Society - Vice President, Government Affairs

Working closely with the Society President and the Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement, designs and directs programs to secure governmental support to further the mission of the Chicago Zoological Society.  Develops strategies and programs to engage Society senior management and trustees in public policy, appropriation efforts, and active relationships with elected and appointed governmental officials on all levels. 

Requirements:

Masters Degree in Political Science, Arts, Sciences, or a relevant business related field or equivalent combination of training and experience required.  Minimum five years directly relevant government affairs experience required; eight years+ preferred.  Government affairs experience must include demonstrated success in developing and maintaining relationships with a variety of elected and/or appointed officials on the local, regional, and/or national levels, including an established network of contacts, as well as success in influencing public policy decisions.  Experience in public relations activities helpful.

Solid written communications skills required; outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with all levels of staff and to establish and maintain effective relationships; articulate, well-spoken individual, capable of effectively representing the organization to various audiences, both within and outside the organization.  Ability to maintain the confidentiality of privileged information; must have a keen understanding and sensitivity to public and private partnerships. 

Strategic thinking and orientation with solid planning and organizational skills; must be proactive with respect to development and government affairs requirements, both short-term and long-term.  Must be able to deal with emergent issues, multiple projects, and internal/external high-level officials simultaneously; must be able to work effectively under pressure and effectively manage sensitive/crisis development and government affairs issues.  Must be a polished individual with a highly professional appearance and demeanor. 

Some travel to government centers or events is required to meet established work objectives. Must possess excellent follow-up and follow through abilities. 

Must be PC literate with the ability to use word processing and database management software packages.  Experience with Razor’s Edge and MS Office Suite a plus.  Strong interest in or appreciation of conservation issues/zoo mission and vision essential.  Valid driver’s license required for Illinois residents within 90 days of hire; valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.  Spanish fluency a plus, but not required.

Program Officer, Local Food - The Lumpkin Family Foundation

The Lumpkin Family Foundation (LFF) is dedicated to supporting education, preserving and protecting the environment and fostering opportunities for leadership, with special consideration to its heritage in Central Illinois. Founded in 1953 by a bequest from Besse A. Lumpkin, whose family created what would grow into one of the country’s largest privately-held telephone companies, the foundation is located in Mattoon, Illinois, and has an endowment of $50 million. 

The Foundation makes grants to central and downstate Illinois organizations in education, preventive health, conservation and organizational capacity building, as well as for youth mentoring and the arts in communities across the country where family members live.  In addition to grant-making, The Foundation operates programs aimed at building nonprofit organizational capacity and community leadership.   

The Foundation seeks a program officer to create and run a local food program leading to economic development and job growth based on the creation of new food enterprises, and to healthy lifestyles and eating habits among people in the region.  The program officer reports to the Executive Director. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

In consultation with the community and the executive director, design and execute programs and targeted actions that support and encourage new, food related businesses.    

Work with organizations that seek to educate institutions and people on the health benefits of consuming locally produced food.   

Lead the development of the knowledge-base and LFF’s understanding of food issues, conducting or commissioning research on the economic, social and health benefits of local food production.     

Develop evaluation tools to measure the impact of LFF’s activities, and support and assess individual grant requests to LFF. 

Build and support collaborations and partnerships among organizations businesses and people with missions of economic development, healthy food consumption and environmental stewardship, encouraging increased purchases of local food and the modeling of healthy eating habits.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum credentials include a B.A. and a minimum of 5-7 years relevant experience leading to an understanding and appreciation of food system issues.  This could include a background in economics or agricultural economics, business development, community and rural economic development or sociology.  A related Masters degree will be helpful. 

Strong communication, relationship-building, listening, and interpersonal skills; the ability to work well both independently and collaboratively and to balance innovation and vision with focus on detail and follow-through.  Available for area and occasional state and national travel.

The successful candidate will be a smart, high-energy person with strong organizational skills who can work comfortably in the rural Midwest and as a facilitator and enabler of the family’s role as agents of change.  S/he will welcome the challenge of finding ways to leverage strong family commitment and finite foundation resources to substantially strengthen the food system in East Central Illinois.  A sense of humor and a constructive outlook are highly valued.

Senior Manager of Program Staff- Ohio Environmental Council

The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) is seeking an experienced manager to serve as the Senior Manager of Program Staff. The OEC is one of the nation's premier state environmental advocacy non-profit organizations. The OEC's mission is to secure healthy air, land, and water for all who call Ohio home.

The Position: The Senior Manager of Program Staff's primary responsibility is the direct supervision of seven advocacy program staff, including direct supervision, monthly work plan oversight, annual evaluations, coordination amongst programs, and overall direction of programs. The Manager also will be responsible for managing foundation grants in collaboration with the advocacy program staff, including identifying funding sources, creating proposals, overseeing budgets, and complying with all grant reporting requirements. Qualifications: The Manager must possess strong leadership qualities and have experience in the direct supervision of employees. We expect the Manager to have integrity, self-motivation, and enthusiasm for environmental protection. The Manager should have demonstrated skills in grant management and significant experience as a manager in an environmental or other public interest advocacy organization, the private sector, or government agency. The Manager should have proven ability to manage and motivate a multi-person staff, create and implement long range plans, and work well with a diverse work environment, and good communication and team-building skills, and proficiency word processing and use of the Internet. The minimum educational qualifications include graduation from a recognized college or university with a Bachelors Degree. An advanced degree with specialization in environment, natural resources, nonprofit management, or public administration is preferred. Knowledge of Ohio- environmental and economic issues, natural history, and politics- is highly desirable.

Communications Manager- Openlands

Openlands is a non-governmental, non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting, expanding and enhancing public space in the Chicago metropolitan area. Since 1963, Openlands had played a key role in almost every major open space initiative in the region.

Description:
Openlands is seeking a communication manager with expertise in strategic communications and media relations. The job will require a 20-25 hour work week with three days spent in the office. Flexibility is required to accommodate organizational deadlines and meetings. The communications manager will work with the program and development staff to engage the public in the work of Openlands by attracting state and local media attention as well as through the organization's web site, newsletters and other publications. The organization is currently involved in a branding and identity initiative and the communications manager will be involved in the completion of the project and the implementation of the new brand identity. The individual will be the organization's communications and media relations specialist.

Primary Responsibilities:
